NILUSHIKA SILVA JAYAWEERA

FOUNDER

Nilushika Silva Jayaweera, owner of an e-commerce business, believes that supporting and empowering women in Sri Lanka is fundamental to economic development and social transformation.

Establishing Emerging Hope Lanka as a non-government organisation in Sri Lanka, Nilu has strived to provide women from low income families with opportunities to receive education and create their own businesses. Her ambition is to fully develop women’s ability in leading independent and meaningful lives through equipping them with micro-finance management skills and financial knowledge.

Being orphaned at fourteen and the eldest among her siblings, Nilu’s persistence and determination in making changes gave her a new beginning in Singapore. Prior to building her own business, Nilu has worked in Singapore as a Foreign Domestic Worker for 16 years. During her time in Singapore, she completed a Business Management course in AIDHA*, enrolled in personal leadership courses, and is currently on her way to become a certified coach.

While focusing on helping women create a bright future, Nilu has also been actively engaging in raising funds for various causes under Emerging Hope Lanka. In 2016, she teamed up with friends and raised funds to help 40 families who were affected by the flood in Sri Lanka.

Her great work was also recognised by public. Nilu was invited to speak at TEDx Singapore Women in October 2016.

*AIDHA is a Singaporean NGO who provides financial literacy programs such as money management, computer literacy, leadership and entrepreneurial skills for foreign domestic workers and lower-income women.
